چکیده

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a partially double-stranded DNA virus, which is a major causative agent of chronic, acute hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in Asian, African and Southern European countries. An estimated 350 to 400 million carriers are found around the world (Wang et al., 2005) and 1 to 2 million people have died from this virus (Mahoney, 1999). In India the prevalence rate of hepatitis is reported to vary from 1 to 13 percent; with an average of 4.7 percent (Thyagarajan et al., 1996). Hepatitis B envelope antigen (HBeAg) is considered as a marker for viral replication but seroconversion from HBeAg to anti-HBeAg positive generally indicates low level of viral production and low level of serum HBV DNA. This generally correlates with improvement of liver disease. HBV has a mutation rate 10-fold higher than other DNA viruses (Tong et al., 2005). In the natural course of chronic infection, loss of HBeAg expression and appearance of antibodies (anti-HBeAg) are usually accompanied by cessation of viral replication. The HBV variants appear during HBeAg seroconversion and they

Mutations in the Basal Core Promoter and Precore/Core Regions of Hepatitis B Virus in Patients Co-Infected With Human Immunodeficiency Virus

ABSTRACT          Background and objectives: Globally, about one third of the population has been infected with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and more than 400 million people have become chronically infected. Nearly, 20-25% of all carriers develop serious liver diseases such as cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). According to t...

Mutations in pre-core and basal-core promoter regions of hepatitis B virus in chronic HBV patients from Golestan, Iran

Objective(s): It has been reported that the mutation of the pre-core (PC) and basal-core promoter (BCP) may play an important role in the development of HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this study the PC and BCP mutations were investigated in chronic HBV patients. Materials and Methods:In this study, 120 chronic HBV patients from Golestan, Northeast of Iran who were not vaccinated...

Mutations at Nucleotide 1762, 1764 and 1766 of Hepatitis B Virus X Gene in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis B and Hepatitis B-Related Cirrhosis

Abstract       Background and objective: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a DNA virus with high tendency toward hepatic tissue. There are currently about 3 million HBV-infected people and 350 to 400 million chronic carriers of this virus in the world. X protein plays a role in the over-expression of oncogenes, carcinogenicity of liver cells and overlaps with the basal co...

Prevalence of HBV precore/core promoter variants in the United States.

Variants in the precore (G(1896)A) and core promoter (A(1762)T, G(1764)A) regions of hepatitis B virus (HBV) may be related to serum HBV DNA levels and severity of liver disease. The aims of this nationwide study were to determine the prevalence of HBV precore/core promoter variants in the United States and the association between these variants and patient demographics, HBV genotypes, serum HB...

A study of genotypes, mutants and nucleotide sequence of hepatitis B virus in Pakistan

BACKGROUND Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes and mutations are gaining importance in determining the clinical course of chronic liver disease. OBJECTIVES To determine and compare the distribution of HBV genotypes and genomic variations in Pakistan to other parts of the world. PATIENTS AND METHODS We conducted a prospective study at Aga Khan University Hospital from December 2006 to December...
